Note: This is a shared apartment listing. This is a converted two-bedroom apartment, which means there are two, separate, private sleeping areas. The main bedroom is the one that is available for guests. The second one is used by me. The apartment is a 5th-floor walk-up and the following is included with the fee: - High-speed Wifi throughout apartment - Shared bathroom (includes bathtub and shower) - Fully equipped, clean kitchen (microwave, toaster, oven, coffee machine) -Gas, electric, heat and hot water The large, fully-furnished main bedroom includes: -A full-sized loft bed -Large windows and a lot of sunlight (the room is 10 feet by 12 feet) -Desk/Chair -Comfy chair -Pub table and stools -Lamps -Dresser and closet -High-speed Wifi and HDTV -All bed sheets, pillows, blankets, towels included About the Neighborhood - East Village -There are many restaurants, shops, a playhouse, live music, and laundromats in the nearby vicinity. Historical: My apartment is in the famed East Village, just about three blocks from Union Square. This area has a rich history. Across the street (now housing) was an old Vaudeville theatre where it is said George Burns had performed. The East Village was the site of "Old World Charm" for many years before becoming home to hosts of artists and creative types in the 1970s. The neighborhood has been highlighted in movies and plays, perhaps most notable the hit Broadway musical, "Rent." Union Square has been the site of demonstrations for decades, with perhaps the largest and most recent being for a period of weeks following 9/11. Culture: Going back to the 1900s, the East Village was heavily populated by Jewish and Polish immigrants. In the early 2000s, many French called it their home and today there is a Japanese community. Area restaurants and businesses reflect those communities. Today, there is an area known as "Little Tokyo," which features a number of Japanese restaurants where sushi and ramen are prevalent. There are off-Broadway theaters as well as many places to see films in the area. Live music is available and can be heard at various bars and clubs including Webster Hall. While many artists have since moved out of the East Village, art is still a big part of the community. There are a host of galleries. Food culture is huge here. The restaurants are incredible, including Momofuku and Danny Meyer's famed Union Square Cafe. His original Shake Shack is about a 15-minute walk away. Not only restaurants, but grocery stores galore. Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, West Side Market on the East Side and the Union Square Farmers' Market are all within a few blocks of one another. This is why I call it "The Food Mecca of the Universe!" Picturesque: Aside from the many brownstones and prewar architecture that is the East Village, it is about a 15-minute walk to the East River where beautiful views of Brooklyn and Queens can be observed. Union Square Park is also a few blocks away, which is both historic and relaxing. The Hudson River is about a 25-minute walk and that's where New Jersey and the Statue of Liberty can be seen across the Hudson River. The Empire State Building and its assorted lights can be seen from various spots around the neighborhood. When I first moved into my apartment, I could actually see the top of the building from my bedroom window. That is no longer possible since an apartment building was erected on the corner blocking my view. Movies & TV Locations: There have been many movies filmed in this neighborhood. One of the most known is "Taxi Driver" starring Robert De Niro. That movie was filmed right outside my apartment in the mid-1970s. The apartment next door is referenced by number in the film. This is where Jodi Foster's pimp was located. Another film, "I Am Legend" starring Will Smith was filmed all around the area. During the filming, many blocks were closed off in the neighborhood at night for weeks to ensure New York City appeared almost void of human life. Sports: It's about a 35-minute subway ride to the famed Yankee Stadium. The new stadium was constructed several years ago within a very short distance of the original site. MetLife Stadium and CitiField are about an hour's train ride away. There are many parks in the area, including East River Park where hosts of people gather to play tennis, basketball, baseball, soccer, running and a host of other sports. Transportation: -The apartment is easily accessible to the bus and subway. Just over a block from the "L" train (located on 14th Street and 3rd Avenue) and a short walk to Union Square Park / Station where stops can be found for the 4, 5, 6, "L", "N", "R", "Q" and "W" trains. About Me: I am an active, clean and considerate guy who worked for a non-profit in the sustainable agriculture / environmental field for many years. Today, my chosen career is life and business coaching. I am easy-going, drink socially and do not smoke or use drugs. I love to go for walks around all areas of the city. It's amazing how diverse it is. Sometimes I don't even feel like I'm still in the city if I hop on a subway and just go to a new location. I do have many interests, including assorted sports, films and traveling. Miscellaneous Please send along a little information about your background, profession and interests during your stay.
